Dr. Amber McKinnon
A little about the doctor...
Dr. Amber McKinnon is an experienced primary care Naturopathic Doctor in general family practice. She is the founder and owner of the Naturally Inclined Health clinic. As a Naturopathic Doctor, Dr. McKinnon focuses on the whole person; she works to find the root cause of disease and helps facilitate the body's path back to health and balance. In her practice, Dr. McKinnon uses natural means to facilitate patient healing; these therapies go beyond the core naturopathic modalities of nutrition, herbal medicine, homeopathy, lifestyle counseling, naturopathic skeletal manipulations, traditional oriental medicine, and acupuncture. Dr. McKinnon has done additional training in Bowen Therapy and has also completed advanced training in intravenous therapies, chelation and various injection therapies including Prolotherapy, Neural Therapy, Mesotherapy, Biopuncture and Trigger Point Therapy. This extensive background allows Dr. McKinnon to choose and mix the best treatment options for each individual patient. Dr. McKinnon proudly sees patients of all ages and levels of health.
Dr. McKinnon received her naturopathic medical training in Vancouver at the Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine (BINM), graduating in 2010. During her time at BINM she had the opportunity to work in a number of external, non-profit, free service clinics in addition to the BINM affiliated clinic. These clinics included the Friends For Life Clinic in Vancouver, which accepts patients diagnosed with cancer, hepatitis C or HIV; the BC Persons with AIDS clinic; and the Family Medicine Clinic. The Family Medicine Clinic is a collaborative effort between the Young Parents Support Network and the Acacia Health Clinic, which supports young, low-income families in the Victoria area. These experiences shaped her clinical experience and gave her valuable experience she may not have otherwise received. Finally, likely the most influential experience was gained while abroad on a medical brigade, on the island of Ometepe in Nicaragua. Nicaragua is the second most impoverished country in the western hemisphere, behind only Haiti. While living with the locals on this island, she worked in clinics and hospitals across the island. It was a beautiful and truly life-changing experience. She learned more than just the applications of naturopathic care, but also about the impact of globalization and socioeconomic policy on the health of a nation.
Before naturopathic medical school, Dr. McKinnon completed her Bachelor of Science at the University of Alberta specializing in immunology and infection. While and the U of A, Dr. McKinnon had the privilege of working alongside some talented researchers in both the departments of social psychology as well as medical microbiology and immunology. Much of the work Dr. McKinnon did with Vaccinia virus (a pox family virus) was published in a paper she co-authored for the medical journal Virology.
In addition to a busy Naturopathic Medical practice, Dr. McKinnon also maintains a committed personal yoga and meditation practice and is active in the Naturopathic community. She is one of the founding members of the Alberta Association of Naturopathic Doctors (AAND) and is a current member with the board. When Dr. McKinnon is not seeing patients or working with the AAND she enjoys time with family and friends, traveling, gardening and spending time outdoors.
